Bridgnorth RFC
Newport (Salop) RUFC

Bridgnorth 0 – 55 Newport

In a week when the hosts had received news of planning approval for a new clubhouse the match result against local rivals and league leaders Newport most certainly dented their celebrations!

Even the most diehard of supporters would agree that on the day Bridgnorth were outgunned by a talented and skilful Newport side. Crisp, clinical and organised in both defence and attack they went on to score 9 tries and restricted their hosts from scoring any points.

A tough day at the office became even tougher when after 5 minutes key player and scrum half Gareth Bladen left the field with a muscle injury. However, despite the Newport dominance, the home players dug deep and never gave up on their efforts to cross the try line. Spirited leadership by captain Jonah Boyce with determined back up from his fellow forwards had the home crowd willing them a score as they attempted to breech the Newport defence in the 22 on several occasions. Wing three quarter Scott Mackenzie gave a good account of himself as stand – in scrum half whilst Burgess, Biddell and Smallman made several strong runs into opposition territory.

Coaches and players will move on and work hard on the training ground this week determined to perform as they know they can in order to climb back up the league

A 55 – 0 defeat is not for the club scrap book, but it serves as a reminder that sport can deliver its emotional highs and lows! Next week Bridgnorth visit lowly placed Nuneaton where a test of character and teamwork will be waiting. As always, the travelling support will be fully behind the Bridgnorth team fully confident that each player will again give 100% to the cause.

Congratulations to Newport RFC for a fine display of rugby football.
